12 December 2019 – Bernia

Ten of us for the last walk of 2019
It should have been twelve, but Tom and Sue had to cancel this morning
We have done 25 walks with our Thursday Explorers group this year
Bernia was a suitable choice to end a year of excellent walks
The weather forecast promised a cold, windy day

And everyone came prepared, except for John who turned up in shorts and T shirt

Apparently his weather forecast had promised cloudy but warm
Fortunately he had a jacket in his car
Thanks to Steve for this excellent photo of the tunnel
And this one of the exit
As always we had our banana break at the tunnel
To admire this most impressive of views
We left the sun behind at the tunnel
The wind was worse on this side, and very cold
So we pressed on past our usual picnic site
We had lunch at the fort, where there was more shelter from the wind
And another inspiring view to admire
Even here it was too cold to linger for long
Despite the cold, and the grey sky, it was still a very impressive walk
And I think everyone shared our view that it was an excellent walk

Stats
Time taken 5 hours
Distance 9.5 km
Total ascent 492 metres
