31 October 2019 – Fig Tree

This walk should really be called the “figless tree”
I have never seen figs on the tree, and it now looks sadder than ever
Quite a few of the group were doing this one for the first time

It starts with a steep hour long climb right from the car park
Some of the steeper sections of the road are now concrete
This made the climb easier, but ruined the look of the walk
We were all pleased to reach the finca
Having introduced the new ones to the sad fig tree we had our banana break
As we settled down a warden drove up and stopped
He wanted to know where we had parked, and I remembered passing a new chain and no entry sign at the start of the walk
Fortunately we were all parked in the layby on the Castells road
We had a long chat, with Miren translating, and he asked us to look out for illegal hunters, cars or anyone doing any damage
He left his card and I told him we would be quite happy to do anything we could to help
Next came the always difficult track over the dense undergrowth
It has gotten considerably worse, and I found it difficult to find the path in places
If it gets much worse we will have to abandon this walk, which would be a shame
Just as we got on the open track Jan stumbled and fell quite hard on her face
No serious damage done, but she will be bruised and may have a black eye in the coming days
On the return journey we found a lot more concrete, making the descent much easier
We finished at the Cooperativa in Parcent, where Sue bought Jan a very large, and much appreciated, glass of wine
Stats
Distance – 14 Km
Time Taken – 5 hours
Total Ascent – 625 metres
